I've been a Pokemon fan since my dad got me Pokemon Yellow when I was three and played through the game with me. From then on I played through all the games as they came out and never grew tired of the game. I never thought any of the generations of Pokemon were better than the others, I just thought they were all pretty awesome. It seems like a majority of Pokemon fans believe that 3rd Generation, Hoenn, was the best by far though. When X & Y was announced there were a bunch of people that were outraged that they weren't instead making the 3rd gen remakes. This completely baffled me! Why would Pokemon fans be upset because they are making a new generation of Pokemon with tons of new features and more importantly new Pokemon! It also means that the 3rd gen remakes with be in 3D which will probably be really cool if they are created! The 3rd generation was really fun and had a ton of awesome Pokemon in it, but it isn't superior to the other games! I understand that many people were brought up on the third generation, but if you are a true Pokemon fan a new generation should be way more exciting then a remake of the game you started with. When this happened I began to believe that Hoenn is very overrated. The only reason it stands out is because Gen one and two were created together and were meant to be the only Pokemon games. After Pokemon had so much success they decided to continue it and began creating gen three. For this reason gen three is much different then the first two gens and was on the game boy advanced which enhanced its graphics.
To sum up I just don't really understand why so many people love generation three over all the other gens. I loved it myself, but not more than any other Pokemon game! Do you think Gen three is overrated?

I agree with you John, way too many people like Hoenn. I agree that it had a lot of new awesome features, but I rage quitted on emerald when I got to the part with too much water. What is this, a Legend of Zelda game? Also I agree with you that each new game introduces new mechanics, I don't know why people are raging about X and Y.

Hoenn was basically the restarting point of Pokemon with better graphics and a better plot. Although I do think it is overrated because it isn't that damn important over having a new Generation of Pokemon. Sixth Generation was a much better choice than a RS' remade. I feel that RB & GS only had a remade because of how many mistakes they did in those games. Like in RBY, how you were to get Mew pretty easily and the rare candy glitch. Also in GSC, the Celebi Egg Glitch. I am sure these aren't just "normal" glitches but was intended by GameFreak in the first places. Once they reach the sixth generation, they didn't want trainers to have these Pokemon so that why you can't transfer your GSC's Pokemon to RSFRLGE. Since the third generation didn't have those glitches, they bought back the transfer system. The first generation and the second generation was mainly remade so they wouldn't be forgotten. This is all my opinion though so I might not be 100% correct.

Not to mention the region itself was pretty bad. Talk about a watery hellhole, geez. I did not want to spend the last stretch of the game, surfing around aimless in the ocean for an eternity -.-

I wouldn't necessarily say it's overrated. It has it's merits. The Hoenn region was pretty neat and Gen III's plot was better than all of the others.
If any game was overrated, it'd be the gen IV games (not HG/SS). The only thing noteworthy about gen IV was the physical/special split.

I don't really see it as overrated, but then again it does seem like the most LP'd game besides Gen 1 games so that means something. I don't think it's underrated at all though, I has a lot of the same points that people talked about in the Kanto overrated thread. I think we even touched base on if gen 3 games needed a remake and a lot of you said it wasn't necessary. The game was amazing and is a classic on it's own, but a people do need to see that they can't stay in gen 3 forever and there's a lot more to the series now.

Gen 4 fixed EVERYTHING that was wrong with gen 3. It had a better region and a better plot. Not to mention the crime organization is more evil than the ones in gen 3. In gen 4, team galactic planed to destroy the world and recreate it with the creators. Tell me thats not more epic than gen 3!

In gen 4, team galactic planed to destroy the world and recreate it with the creators. Tell me thats not more epic than gen 3! That's not more epic than Gen 3. Gen 3's plot was IMMENSELY better than Gen 4. It was philosophical and dealt with the struggle between man and nature and whether selfish desires in favor of either side would benefit the world. IT WAS AN INTELLIGENT PLOT, which is what I really valued. While Gen 4 had a more "developed" plot, it wasn't anything thought provoking. At the end of the day, it was nothing more than a generic take over the world plot with the protagonist in a futile struggle with the bad guys over some plot coupons (Azelf, Uxie, and Mesprit). And another point in favor of Gen 3, the world was actually pretty good. Everyone complains about all of the water, but THERE REALLY WASN'T THAT MUCH SURFING! Most of the aquatic areas were completely optional anyway. All you have is: surf to Mosdeep, dive to Sootopolis, surf to Pokemon League. The entire bottom of the map is not required to beat the game, and it's filled with interesting stuff anyway (Sky Pillar, the floating city, a ship wreck, the cave that unlocks the Regis). Either way, there's not much more surfing than Gen 2 where you had to go to and from Cianwood. There's actually a picture I saw that illustrates my point about the water, but I couldn't find it to share it here. Other interesting places: a volcano, an ash covered field, a sandstorm desert, a town in the treetops, underwater in general, and the cool place with the waterfalls and Bagon. The Hoenn region is pretty darn cool. So, I still stand by my point that Gen 3 is not overrated. Anyway, I'm not really bashing Gen 4, I just think that it's weaker than the other games in the series and get a little too much credit. But to add another point, Gen 4 was when they started getting out of hand with event only guys. (Darkrai, Arceus, Shaymin, Manaphy). Or at least, it felt that way to me.

I honestly think Gen 4 was better than Gen 3 because it was the much more interesting. Like Spencer said, I think the plot in Gen 4 was much more intriguing then Gen 3. I don't know if I would be playing Pokemon now...If not for the Physical, Special split (I actually don't know when the split was...But I think they did it in Gen 4). Gen 4 also introduced hail I believe, which is quite cool (pun intended).
I honestly think Sinnoh is the second best region in the game Pokemon-wise. I honestly think Hoenn is the worst region in the game (not that I despise it). But I am not as educated as you two on this...I just wanted to state my opinion based on the decent amount of knowledge I know about the game.

I'm not saying I hate Gen 3, I actually loved how it brought more to the series just like every game. I just feel that is was given too much credit. And I can see it's not on this forum, but outside of the forum their are way too many gen 4 haters.

As for the haters, all of the Generations have a lot of haters, but they are outweighed by the lovers,

In all my years surfing the internet regarding mostly unrelated topics such as dinosaurs and Shingeki no Kyojin, never have I been under the impression that the Hoenn region as a whole was rated any higher than the other regions, so I'm not entirely sure what makes it overrated in the first place.
