Okay, okay, okay. I see a lot of people bitching about Smogon being dumb for trying to make the game balanced and "forcing" their rules on everyone. But I just saw what is quite possibly the worst argument I've ever seen... I just had to make a thread about this.
"Also why suddenly Pokemon has to be balanced? We don't have balance in every other sports, some teams are always better than the rest. The US swimming team swept most of gold medals in the last couple of Olympics, are we going to ban them from Olympics?"
*slow claps* Wow internet, you never cease to amaze me. I never knew tests of athletic ability were unbalanced! Garsh! Maybe the reason I fail at sports is because those stupid athletic types are unbalanced and should be banned from the game! It all makes sense now...

I dont understand. Are you for or against Smogon trying to force their rules? Personally I take Smogon as a guide not my rules. So lets say that when I get 6th Gen. I'll probably use Kangaskhanite/Greyninja with Protean. Furthermore Blaziken & Excadrill which althouth they are banned. I still use them in competitive battle.
The Olympics can be debated deeply. The same goes for Canada/Russia/Norway which all have mountains to practice in. This may sound funny, but have you heard of any African or South American country in the Winter Olympics who is represented as a threat to the other country? I dont think so.(No facts to support me).

He is trying to demonstrate the lack of knowledge of the other people who were insulting smogon. As they say sports have no rules ore regulations like smogon does which is quite wrong. Every sports has a set of rules to avoid cheating or unfair advantages, in boxing there are lightweight, heavyweight, and other type of championships depending on the person's weight to avoid unfair advantage and to make it more fair. Baseball has banned the use of certain baseball bats as they provide quite a huge and unfair boost in the swing, as well with some baseballs. Every sport has a rule on the amount of team members(If they are team sports), a rule which bans the use of drugs(Which steroids provide an unfair advantage in muscles, while some lighter drugs like marihuana cease several pain which would be an advantage in sports like box and kickboxing). And about the person and training facilities, we all share the same potential(In sports) so it is as if we are all the same pokemon. What makes things different is how we train, the effort we give and the amount of practice we receive(Similar to how we train our pokemon for different sets).

Protean Greninja and Excadrill aren't banned in Gen VI. Also, nobody ever forces anyone to use Smogon rules, it's just that so many people like and therefore use them that people start to assume other people will play by them as well. The thing is, everyone has a set of pokemon or strategies that they think are "broken" or "unfair." (It's not as if the people who don't like Smogon are advocating "anything goes." E.g., people who want all legendaries banned, not just the OP ones.) If there's gonna be a community of people battling there needs to be a standardized set of rules that people can assume others will use. Given Smogon is this huge competitive battling community, and given the amount of thought and testing and discussion by that battling community that goes into all the banning decisions (it's not just like the Smogon admin gives a thumbs up or down), it just kind of makes sense to use theirs, especially when the alternative tends to be "whatever each individual battler thinks should be banned." If you know there's this huge community out there that uses these rules, then if you want to use different rules you should clarify that before the battle instead of just doing whatever you want and making fun of the person for complaining about it.

I feel as if the problem with arguing against these omgsmogonsonazifksmogonitotallyknowwhatimdoingurmom children is that doing so implies that they're literate, which is something I find quite difficult to believe at times

There was that one bobsled (or something similar) from a country that's pretty much a tropical island that won gold. Any team can win. Just having access to more better training doesn't necessarily make you better. My point wasn't really for or against Smogon (I have no problem with them), it's just that people who hate them have some REALLY stupid arguments.
