Basically it's the celebration of settlement of colonies in America and a mix of some other things. It's celebrated by eating Turkey and getting together with your family and enjoying a home cooked meal.

I still don't see, why do most countries of america celebrate the day they were colonized. It should be a bad thing in my opinion.

Thanksgiving was actually a feast that Pilgrims threw for the local natives, who helped them survive, and prosper.

To consume abnormal amounts of avian carcasses in a brief period of time?
I would think it's because we live in a Western society and thus, it's considered a good thing for Western society to trump all.
EDIT: I thought Thanksgiving was to thank God for a plentiful harvest, or have I been misinformed?

Well, although the stereo typical food in Thanksgiving is the turkey, there are many other foods that are cooked on a Thanksgiving day...Man am I stuffed!

Or nothing for those who don't celebrate it.
