Has anyone else played this series? It started out in Japan with Megami Tensei on the NES and gained some popularity when Shin Megami Tensei came out on the SNES. Now, the series is gaining popularity because of the recently Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS.
If you haven't played this series, DO IT! These are some of the best RPGs around, and you will not be disappointed.
For those of you who haven't played them(which I'm assuming most of you haven't), here's what to expect:
You recruit demons and control them as your minions (sort of like Pokemon, but this series came first). Then you can fuse them together and get new, stronger demons. I think every game from the second one onward has the function where you fuse demons together and the result inherits skills from the ones you fused. The way you recruit demons is interesting. You have to negotiate with them and CONVINCE them to join you. You spend a lot of time learning how to do this through trial and error to learn the personalities of certain demons (so, it's just like meeting new people in real life, you don't know what to expect).
The game focuses a lot on having huge dungeons with high encounter rates. It's a very difficult trek to go pretty much anywhere, and half the challenge is just finding out how to get there. Constant danger!
On top of a high encounter rate, the enemies are typically very difficult, and can easily kill you're party if you let you're guard down for a second. It's intentionally unbalanced, and always challenging. The bosses are pretty tough too (less so in the first game, but still hard).
Finally, the approach to story is pretty neat. It's practically not there, but it's all philosophical and deals with the struggle between Law and Chaos. Certain actions you take will take you through a different story route (there's typically a Law, Neutral, and Chaos route). There's a lot of interesting points brought up about everything.
(And if you're playing the Persona games (which are technically not part of Shin Megami Tensei, but are...), combine a lot of these elements with a high school anime, and it becomes more story oriented.)
SO, if you like obnoxiously difficult, yet addicting RPGs, PLAY SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI! Either get the new one on the 3DS, or do what I did and get a translated ROM of the first one.
