I just saw a thread about this on Gamefaqs and thought it was interesting enough to introduce here.
So, are the starters in gen V easily outclassed when compared to a lot of guys you find in the wild?
I almost exclusively take the masochist challenge and start with the grass types, so my opinion on this is probably a tad distorted. But I think the starters are outclassed. I didn't find myself using my starter much, if at all since he wasn't doin much for me.

I personality don't think any of the starter really useful in this generation, although I do have Oshawott and his evolution lines but they aren't really powerful. Also, Fire/Fighting is just so old now.

Honestly, I thought fire/fighting was old when they mad Gen IV too. They all just seem to be crappier versions of Blaziken.

Infernape is a good Pokemon, but way too overpowered for a starter. Emboar is just plain old horrible.

I agree, infernape is really overpowered...and cliche...a has a unoriginal design...i hate infernape overall.

On the contrary I never found Infernape to be overpowered. He was good, great mixed stats an all, but I never thought he could hit hard enough.

That's pretty much the case. He was at least a viable option for battles for the majority of the game though.

Especially compared to Torterra and Empoleon. Torterra's decent and nothing more and Empoleon just...sucks.

If everything didn't have f*cking Ice Fang, Torterra would have OP in Platinum. I still loved the guy though. The first grass starter from any gen that I actually like

I always thought Meganium and Sceptile were pretty good. In fact, Torterra was the first grass starter I DIDN'T like.

I hated Meganium. So hard to use. 1st gym. Raped. 2nd gym. Raped. 4th gym. Raped due to Morty's pokemon being poison typed. 6th gym. Useless. 7th gym. Raped. 8th gym. Useless. Team Rocket. Useless. Pokemon League. Not good on type matchups.

Starting with a grass type a challenge? strange thing is i started with snivy but i beat the game with an egg of zorua my friend gave me. But in my opinion their running out of ideas for good starter typings, they should actually make a starter who's second typings becomes dragon after evolving and think about typings they haven't made before(water/Ice, Fire/Ground Grass/Dragon).

Actually, I'd prefer it they kept the starters standard. That way they can justify using similar typings.
