What kind of Pokemon forum are we if this isn't a poll somewhere? (I mean, we had a favorite Pokemon game thread, but this is a bit more focused. And it's a poll...)
I've probably said this before, I still think Gen II is the best. Yeah, it was my first one, but I still liked it even after I evolved from a stupid kid to a nostalgia-proof cynical bastard and replayed Gold and played Soul Silver.
Gen II was pretty ground breaking. It fixed pretty much everything that was wrong in Gen I mechanically. www.funnyjunk.com/channel/pokemon/Problems+with+Gen+1/nBoaGaO (all of that). On top of that, finding out that there was a whole other region to explore was pretty mindblowing back in the day, and it's still pretty awesome now. Yeah, there's less stuff in Kanto than there was in the first game, but that's because you already did all of the major stuff in Kanto in the first game. Having another region to conquer made it feel like you were actually achieving beyond collecting the 8 badges and defeating the champion. Experiencing Kanto in Gen II felt right because there wasn't too much of an enforced playing order. You can do everything in Kanto in pretty much any order you wanted. So, after you complete the main game, there's an entire other region for you to defeat in whatever way you like. The setup is pretty ingenious.
The Johto region was pretty nice too obviously. Tin Tower, Whirl Islands, the lighthouse, that little Miltank farm, the Bellsprout Tower, the Radio Tower, the Lake of Rage, etc. There were a lot of cool neat locations that even when they were conveyed with only the Game Boy Color's limited graphic capabilities, you were still convinced that you were exploring a neat place. The remakes only did this justice. A lot of the caves you run into were pretty interesting. There's the one that connects Ekrutek and Mahogany, you can use it simply as a passage way, but you discover that there's a whole bunch more to it. There's the ice cave. Not much to say about it, but it's damn neat. Nothing too creative, but neat and well done.
I won't go on any further in my "Why I Like Gen II" rant, but I'll end it by saying that Gen II had an awesome rival. The fact that he remains an enigma makes him seem much cooler. And he ended up being a threatening opponent for the most part. Personally, I think he was the best rival. Blue was kinda just that immature jerk who was somehow always one step ahead of you even though you could regularly kick his ass. May was a fumbling idiot who arbitrarily blocked your progress once or twice in the game, Barry was completely unmemorable, and Cheren seemed to be just kind of there.
ENOUGH OF MY RANT! What's everyone else's opinion?
