And tell why. Just looking at lists is boring.
10. 999: Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors
Hands down the best plot I've seen in any game. All of the characters are well developed and you find yourself legitimately caring about everyone's troubles. The tension constantly leave you on the edge of your seat and the plot twists at the end are MIND BLOWING.
9. Bayonetta
A great hack n' slash game. The gameplay is top notch and is perfectly designed so that when you screw up, it's your fault, not the games. The themes are interesting and the characters are all neat. Has some of the best boss fights I've ever experienced and the last boss actually deserves the overused description of "epic."
8. Devil May Cry
Everything about this game felt right. It was hard. It was incredibly cool. And it sucks you into a dark world that's feels very menacing. The simple yet effective combat system is incredibly engaging and involves a lot of reflex. The boss enemies are quite menacing and the lass boss is REALLY cool. Considering this game was originally going to be Resident Evil 4, a lot of the horror themes are very prevalent and really create a great atmosphere. Plus, Dante is pretty badass.
7. Metroid Prime
This game is incredibly immersive. The environments all feel so real and when you get lost, you simply enjoy the scenery and look around. The enemy design and weapons are quite nice and the classic Metroid gameplay of looking for tanks and powerups is still intact despite the 3d gameplay.
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
This game unfortunately lives in Ocarina of Time's shadow for whatever reason. Maybe it's because Majora's Mask was a bajillion times harder? The three day system is very well implemented and gives you a constant sense of urgency without being obnoxious about it. The problem you're trying to solve seems much more important than "A princess was kidnapped and now everything within a one mile radius of the Temple of Time is desolate." THE MOON IS GOING TO CRUSH THE WORLD! The face on the moon only makes it all the more menacing. This game is filled with a bunch of very nice sub plots too and you get a reward for just about every person you help out. On top of that. The temples are very intuitive and the multiple forms you can change into are all very cool and keep the gameplay dynamic.
5. Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism
I'm absolutely obsessed with this game series. On the game vs. art spectrum, it some how manages to successfully sit on BOTH ends of that spectrum at the same time. Out of the entire series though, this one is the best. The soundtrack is mind blowing. The levels are very well designed and nice to look at. The characters are some of the more interesting one's in the series. And the difficulty is out of this world! The difficulty is well implemented in just as it is in Bayonetta. All of your mistakes are YOUR fault. Plus, the system of bombing makes it much more of a decision to bomb or take the hit since bombing lowers your power level. It's perfect.
4. Bioshock
The world of Rapture is one of the finest fictional settings I've every experienced. Even better than the environments of Metroid Prime. It's a utopia gone HORRIBLY wrong. Everything you see reminds you that it was supposed to be a great place, but reality always sets in and you feel bad that it turned out the way it did. Everything from the insane splicers to the happy 50s music constantly reminds you of the clash between the ideals and reality. Top this all of with some high quality gameplay that allows you to approach combat in pretty much anyway you like and a very neat story with a shocking plot twist.
3. Resident Evil 4
My first exposure to what's become my favorite game series. This game is incredibly freaky and very well paced. The transition from a freaky village to the cultist castle to the infested military base is great. The level of action gradually increases and the enemies keep getting scarier (REGENERATORS AND IRON MAIDENS!). On top of that, the inventory system is very intuitive and has a good deal of organization and interactivity that I don't really see in many games. The gameplay is just great and involves the perfect combination of precision and reflex. This game is just great.
2. The World Ends With You
One of the most unique game experiences I've ever had. The plot is very interesting. The main protagonist, Neku, finds out that he's dead and he's involved in this crazy week long game where the winner is brought back to life. Of course, it's not exactly that simple, and the plot is very cool. The characters are all flushed out and a lot of the dialogue is entertaining. The art direction is pretty nice as well and the anime touches are very appreciated (at least by me they are). The combat is great and makes perfect use of both screens on the DS without feeling schizophrenic. Plus, the pin system is massive and there are TONS of options to choose from, making this a very open-ended approach to combat. Plus, the game is as hard as you want it to be with an option to change the difficulty at ANY moment. But, harder difficulty levels get you better rewards. You're hard work in this game does not go unappreciated.
1. La-Mulana
My favorite game of all time. The music. The gameplay. The story. The puzzles. Everything is perfect here. All of the puzzles are incredibly difficult and mind-warpingly complex. However, they're ALL doable. The answer for every puzzle is in the game somewhere, and given the environment you're in, it makes sense that they would be. The game takes places in the ruins of The Mother, the creator of all life, and you progress as you fight the guardians, solve puzzles, and ultimately solve the mysteries of the ruins and obtain the treasure. The plot is very cool, I'll leave it at that. The gameplay involves explorative platforming. The multiple areas of the ruins are all fascinating and are all themed in some way. You're always finding something cool. The game is also very unforgiving. There are a lot of chances to REALLY screw yourself up, so it's very similar to the way archeologists would approach ancient ruins. You gotta be careful. You gotta keep your wits. You gotta be prepared to tackle anything the ruins throw at you. To make things even better, the recent remake of this game did it a lot of justice and made it even better! Everyone should play this game.
Okay guys. Your turn.
