They are all fun at first then you relieve it just the same as all the other Super Mario Bros game. You just defeat some Goomba then battle Bowser or one of this generals, and at the end of the game you re-battle Bowser and save Peach. Not much new ever happens.

But levels are different. Although I think most people enjoyed the challenge of the classic Super Mario Brothers. After all, Super Mario Brothers is the most popular video series I'v heard.

Well, considering the type of game Mario is, the term "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" doesn't really apply. Mario always has the potential to innovate, but the side-scrolling Mario games rarely do.
On the other hand, if it's a game centered entirely on art design and is in a genre that allows little room for flexibility, then by all means, stick to the same formula.
A good example of a game that follows that same exact formula all the time without becoming stale is the Touhou series (ya' know? The one in my icon.) Play a few of the games and you'll see what I mean.

Even though the levels are different, it is still the same story repeating over and over again. It is just a popular game series because it been out there for a long time and was Nintendo's first real success.

Nintendo is shameless enough to not even change the damsel in distress story for the side scrolling Marios games. At least the Zelda games bother to put the story in a totally different context each time (or pull a Majora's Mask and abandon the concept altogether, making the best game in the series).

Yes, I prefer games like Megaman and Pokemon over the Super Mario Bro's Series, because there is a different plot in each game and it is just better to play something different in game.

That being said, I do give Nintendo credit for changing it up a bit with Mario series like Galaxy and Paper Mario.

The one thing they do change from game to game is the mechanics that's about it. I mean compare Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 3. It had the same side scrolling gameplay, and same plot as the first one, the only difetence is they introduced new things like the Tanookie suit. That's the way Mario rolls.

Oh, SMB 3 was ground-breaking for platformers back in the day. The release of that and Super Mario World (also SMW 2: Yoshi's Island) were when Nintendo hit the high point then kinda stopped trying to be new with the 2d Mario games. The new ones on the Wii, while they are fun, they don't have much going on for them.

Super Mario World is till one of my favorite games of all time.
